Types of Goldfish Diseases

Here is a list of some of the more popular goldfish diseases. When trying to find out which disease your goldfish may have, try to really "study" your fish, as to their behavior, eating habbits, etc.

You want to have as much information as you can about your sick goldfish, before going ahead and trying to cure a goldfish disease that it may not have.

Ich (Ichtyopthirius): This is one of the most common diseases. This is a type of parasite which attaches itself to a stressed goldfish. Then they feed off of the fish. They look like little shiney stars on the goldfish. They will fall off in a day or two and will lay eggs, which will then start the process over again.

Fin Rot: This can occur after an injury to the body or fins of the fish. This is a
bacterial infection that starts after the fish is already weak. The fin will start rotting away, looking like it was torn.

Fungus: There are many different types of fungi, the most common is a white cotton looking kind which will infect an open injury.

Constipation: This can occur with fatty foods. A good diet of green foods can help this.

Dropsy: It is a bacterial infection that causes the abdomen to become swollen and the scales can stick out from the body of the goldfish. There are a few different types of Dropsy.

Pop Eye: With this, the eyes of the fish bulge out from the eye socket. This can often be the first signs of Dropsy.

Anchor Worm: A white worm will stick to the fish, and at the point of attachment there will be a red ring. In most cases, the worm would have come from live foods.

Fish Lice: This can infect many different types of goldfish. It is a round green creature that attaches itself to the goldfish and draws blood from it.

Swim Bladder Disorder: This is when a goldfish either floats or sinks, they have an equilibrium problem. The fish sometimes may swim upside down.

There are more goldfish diseases, but these are some of the more popular types. Get to know what your fish, so that you can more easily tell when you have a sick goldfish.
